A stunning pair of antique 14 karat yellow gold Biedermeier earrings in a floral motif with a dormouse lever back design. The motif of each earring consists of a pair of cream colored natural pearls, framed by a quintet of turquoise colored glass cabochons.
Biedermeier jewelry dates from the early to mid 1800s in Germany and Austria. The designs of the jewels tend to be simple and intimate, referencing nature, natural forms and emphasizing harmony with the natural world (partly a creative response to volatile political and social happenings during this era.)
These “dormeuse” or sleeper earrings are a style designed to be comfortable and facile to wear - so much so that they may even be worn to sleep, if desired. They are put on with the hook through the back of the earlobe and fasten in the front, through a golden loop just above the gemstone element of the earrings. These antique earrings are in wonderful condition for their age, ready for a second lifetime of wear.
