A sweet, 1940s era 14 karat yellow and white gold ring with a single round natural star sapphire cabochon set at the center. The star sapphire has light, slightly grayish blue coloring and a clear six-rayed star pattern. It is set in double prong settings in white gold, nicely complementing the colors of the gem, with tapered shoulders and shank in yellow gold. The phenomenal feature of asterism, a star-like effect in gems is caused by light reflecting off tiny, needle-like inclusions within the gem. Asterism occurs naturally in sapphires and rubies and can also be synthesized in a laboratory; this gem is an example of a natural star sapphire.
