Souvenir of Lourdes Pendant Necklace
Souvenir of Lourdes Pendant Necklace
These sweet religious charms count among my favorite varieties of jewelry. Originally produced as souvenirs of the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France, a holy site said to have been visited by apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1858. Pilgrims who journey to the site typically pray, drink and bathe in the waters of the grotto. Produced in plated metal (likely silver over brass) these medals are both a poignant and economic reminder of the journey their wearers took. The face of the pendant features a profile of Mary with a halo, set within a geometric border. The reverse features an image of the Lourdes Grotto. Paired with an 18” sterling silver paperclip chain, which fastens with a spring ring style clasp.
