Onyx and Gold Intaglio Ring

This vintage ring is highly evocative of an antique design with a few modern twists. A central oval shaped black onyx cabochon features a carving of a female figure - likely the gorgon creature Medusa - encircled with a carved ring. The stone gracefully slopes downwards to a golden bezel setting. The mounting of this ring is 10k yellow gold, with a buckle detail at either side of the ring’s shoulders. 

Medusa was a figure of Greek mythology with a head full of snakes where hair would be. Said to turn men to stone with a single glance, Medusa has been reclaimed in modern times as a symbol of feminine power as well as an evil eye protective charm. Intaglio rings have been used since ancient times to act as seals or signatures in wax. They can bear family crests or imagery, sometimes riddles or portraits. This ring could be used as a wax seal should you desire, or simply worn for pleasure.

Oval agate in setting measures 20.8mm tall and 15.7mm wide. Setting rises 4.5mm off the finger. At back of ring, narrowest part of ring shank measures 1.6mm.
