Nephrite Jade Hermes Intaglio Ring

A romantic intaglio ring imbued with history. Fashioned in 10 karat gold, this ring hails from the late Georgian/early Victorian era. A central intaglio of carved nephrite (a variety of jade) features a left-facing portrait of the Greek/Roman god Hermes/Mercury.

In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods, the protector of travelers, and the patron of merchants and eloquent speech. Known for his wit and ingenuity, he was also a guardian of thresholds and crossroads, guiding those embarking on new journeys. His Roman counterpart, Mercury, similarly came to represent commerce, movement, and good fortune.

Long associated with the passage between worlds and the exchange of messages, Hermes makes a particularly intriguing subject for an intaglio: a miniature portrait that carries meaning beyond its image. Intaglio portion of ring measures 13.5mm tall and 13.4mm wide. Gallery of ring sits 33mm off finger. Shoulders of ring measure 2.7mm wide, tapering to 1.5mm wide at back of ring shank.
