Moonstone, Emerald, Ruby, Diamond and Sapphire Pendant

A striking vintage pendant featuring a large moonstone cabochon surrounded by colorful gemstones and ornate metalwork. A central moonstone cabochon, which is slightly chatoyant (has a cat's eye phenomenon effect) is accented at cardinal points by small emerald, ruby, sapphire and diamond details, all incorporated into an elaborate 14 karat gold vermeil mounting.

Moonstone has long inspired associations with the moon, intuition, and the rhythms of the natural world. Occassionally, moonstone displays chatoyancy creates a shifting band of light across the surface, lending the stone an almost otherworldly quality as it moves in the light. Often associated with intuition, inner knowing, and new beginnings, moonstone makes a fitting centerpiece for a jewel intended to be worn close.

Ruby, emerald, sapphire, and diamond, set at the cardinal directions around the moonstone, lend the pendant a further sense of meaning. The four points of the compass have long served as guides for travelers, marking orientation and offering a sense of direction in unfamiliar territory. Arranged around the luminous center, these contrasting gems evoke a personal compass: a reminder to find one's bearings, remain centered amid change, and follow one's own path.

The ornate gold vermeil frame, with its scrolling details and raised texture, gives the pendant a particularly decorative character. I especially like the unexpected combination of the soft moonstone with the vivid little pops of ruby, emerald and sapphire. It has substantial presence on the neckline while remaining easy to wear.

This pendant is fashioned from 14 karat gold vermeil over solid sterling silver and comes on a gold-filled chain, which fastens with a spring ring style clasp.
