A charming miniature Victorian-era locket in 10 karat gold. Emblazoned in beautiful cursive letters with the name “Rowena” surrounded by engraved flourishes in a circular pattern intersecting the letters of the name. This sweet and romantic jewel opens near the top of the locket, next to the bail. Inside are two circular spaces within which a photo or memento may be slipped. The back of the locket is blank and could be worn facing out, or engraved with a different name by your jeweler. Locket and bail are 10k gold; comes complete with a gold-filled chain which fastens with a spring ring style clasp. Rowena was the wife of Ivanhoe in Sir Walter Scott’s 1819 novel Ivanhoe.

What is “gold-filled?” Gold-filled jewelry is higher quality than gold-plated and lower cost than solid (alloyed) gold. Typically, gold-filled jewelry is required to have a 1/20th (or 5%) weight in gold (usually 14k,) which is affixed/bonded to all exterior portions of the jewelry item (which usually has a brass, or sometimes copper, core.) Gold-plated jewelry has no such standards and as a result usually involves a much thinner coating of gold. Gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime without showing signs of wear and makes for excellent and durable everyday-wear pieces.
