A lovely vintage black onyx and 14 karat yellow gold pendant necklace, featuring a central motif of an egg-shaped carving, framed in a gold “gift wrapped” setting. The pendant even features a little gold wire bow atop the egg and below a gold bail, which connects it to an 18” gold-filled chain which fastens with a spring ring style clasp. Egg pendants were popularized in Imperial Russian tradition. The jewelry artisan and master enameler Faberge produced numerous “egg” designs, both in large scale and pendants, which were often given as gifts by members of the Imperial family at Easter time. Eggs in this context were powerful symbols of new life, resurrection, hope, purity and potential.
