Gemstone Scarab Necklace
Gemstone Scarab Necklace
Colorful and eye-catching scarab jewels such as this necklace are terrific examples of the Egyptian revival aesthetic that has been wildly popular since the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. Scarabs are symbols of transformation, protection, renewal and rebirth. They represent eternal life and the natural cycles of life: poignant and important symbols!
This necklace was made in the middle of the 20th century and consists of fifteen carved scarabs - each encircled by a golden bezel - set in a long row with a golden link between each. The gems of this collar necklace are cabochon shaped with beautiful and thoughtfully carved details on both the front and reverse sides; they include: chalcedony, banded agate, bloodstone, rock crystal (quartz,) onyx, amethyst, unakite and tigers eye scarabs. The necklace is fashioned from gold-filled metal and fastens with a spring ring style clasp.
What is “gold-filled?” Gold-filled jewelry is higher quality than gold-plated and lower cost than solid (alloyed) gold. Typically, gold-filled jewelry is required to have a 1/20th (or 5%) weight in gold (usually 14k,) which is affixed/bonded to all exterior portions of the jewelry item (which usually has a brass, or sometimes copper, core.) Gold-plated jewelry has no such standards and as a result usually involves a much thinner coating of gold. Gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime without showing signs of wear and makes for excellent and durable everyday-wear pieces.
