Garnet, Pearl and Gold Pendant Necklace

Evoking ideas of Byzantine treasure and ancient relics, this vintage pendant from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fine jewelry collection is a reproduction of an antique pendant, fashioned from glowing 14 karat yellow gold and set with an oval cabochon red garnet gem, which is framed by a halo of white cultured pearls. Marked at back ©1992 MMA Cleo 14k 585. Flared, fixed bail at top through which a delicate gold-filled curb chain is strung. The chain fastens with a spring ring style clasp.

Aristotle wrote circa 322 B.C.:  “The garnet is a red gem, but not like the ruby; its red is much more like that of a flame ... It forms far in the east ... If correctly cut and polished, it will reveal all its beauty and perfection.” Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January and the gemstone of the second wedding anniversary; pearl is one of the birthstones for the month of June and the gemstone of the 30th wedding anniversary.
