Bloodstone Intaglio and Gold Ring

A beautiful intaglio ring fashioned from a carved, elongated oval cabochon of bloodstone. The intaglio carving depicts an arm holding an anchor. This is the family crest of the “Brooke” family of England, specifically Sir Richard Brooke. The crest dates between the mid 1700s and early 1800s. The family motto that pairs with this crest is, “Spes mea Deus,” meaning, “God is my hope.” Anchors are highly symbolic and in the context of intaglio carvings typically represent hope, stability and strength. Of course, you do not have to be of the Brooke clan to wear and own this ring! I am simply including the information because I find these details fascinating!

The setting of the ring is interesting in two regards: the back of the intaglio is visible through the back of the ring gallery, and carved to fit flush in the setting, a luxe and thoughtful touch. Secondarily, this ring has been reshanked (had the band replaced) at some point in its lifetime. Why this happened is difficult to say, but what remains is a 22 karat rose gold bezel and top portion, married to a 10 karat yellow gold shank. This is visible in the photographs, which are taken at high resolution, but is honestly not very noticeable with the naked eye or while worn. In my opinion, it adds to some of the history and mystery of this ring!

The cabochon is dotted allover with minute hematite inclusions in a bright red hue, against a dark green body color. Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a member of the agate family, a “cousin” (if you will) of carnelian, jasper, agate, onyx and sardonyx. The “blood” in bloodstone is caused by iron oxide inclusions in the body of the gem.

Bloodstone cabochon measures 16.8mm tall and 11.5mm wide. Setting rises 3.5mm off the finger. At back of ring, narrowest part of ring shank measures 3.6mm.
