A large and vibrant bloodstone cabochon is prong-set in a 10 karat yellow gold setting. The face of the cabochon is relatively flat, although very slightly domed, and the back of the cabochon is polished and flat. The color patterns in this gem are absolutely lovely, with a wonderfully busy smattering of red hematite inclusions atop a dark green body color.
Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a member of the agate family, a “cousin” (if you will) of carnelian, jasper, agate, onyx and sardonyx. The “blood” in bloodstone is caused by iron oxide inclusions in the body of the gem. I have included photographs of this ring in my professional light box as well as photographed in bright (direct lighting) and natural (diffused) lighting to illustrate the differences in color variation visible in different light.
