Founded by a potter Josiah Wedgwood in England in 1759, Wedgwood is credited for the invention of jasperware: a variety of unglazed, vitreous fine stoneware. Wedgwood is beloved for its famous colors of jasperware: pastels (and more rarely, dark tones) with accents of white, typically depicting mythological figures and scenes. Wedgwood fine jewelry is an interesting extension in this company’s designs. This ring features a central oval shaped piece of pink jasper (rare to find in Wedgwood jewelry!) depicting the goddess Artemis, who is shown alongside a mythical stag. The ring has geometric, faceted shoulders and a solid, half-round band. The Wedgwood cabochon is marked at the back “Wedgwood Made in England.” The ring features additional hallmarks indicating it was assayed in Birmingham, England in 1960. These inner hallmarks include a lion passant facing left, which indicates silver metal. The gold plating on this ring acid tests as 14 karat gold.
