Art Nouveau Gold Signet Ring
Art Nouveau Gold Signet Ring
A lovely rose gold signet ring with beautiful and delicate proportions, featuring elegant accents. This piece hails from the 1920s or 1930s and features a polished oval face framed by textural details. The shoulders each have a trio of tulip-like yellow gold flowers blossoming in a row. It is engraved with flourishing initials "A F C" and could be re-polished and marked with initials or a family crest by your jeweler, if you wished.
Signet rings are one of the earliest examples of jewelry, with some examples dating as far back as 3500 B.C. Originally, most signets were produced from carved stones. During the Bronze age, a shift in technology and design occurred and signets made entirely from metal began to be crafted in addition to stone and gem intaglios.
While typically no longer used to mark seals on legal documents, signet rings today tend to represent family lines (often with crests or insignia) and/or to mark the initials of the wearer or a loved one. I personally like the look of an un-engraved signet - the bright, reflective face of the ring is so striking and makes a perfect wear-with-everything jewel.
