Antique Pearl and Gold Ring

This stunning antique ring features five gorgeous natural pearls set in a graduated row, cradled by an ornately accented 15 karat yellow gold setting. The pearls are a bright white, with slightly blue overtones and good luster and orient. The central pearl is largest, with each flanking pearl slightly smaller, and each outside pearl slightly smaller than that. The ring’s setting is equally thoughtfully designed. Crafted in 15 karat yellow gold, the series of bezels that cradle the pearls each have a delicate milgrain accent along their border. Each shoulder of the ring features an Etruscan style fluted flourish. The base of the ring is half round and polished.

Antique jewels with original pearls are special for several reasons. Pearls are a soft gem and often do not survive hundreds of years of wear and exposure in pieces of jewelry, so when they have made it to the present day in pristine condition, it is something to celebrate! The pearl culturing industry developed in the early 20th century. Prior to the time when humankind could “make” pearls on demand, they were the rarest and most highly valued gem on earth - more precious than diamonds! A pearl that has come to exist without human intervention (aside from collecting it from the mollusk in which it happened to naturally develop) is called a “natural” pearl.

Pearls make a lovely staple for any jewelry collection. I always caution care when wearing pearls, especially in a ring: to elongate the life of a ring like this, it is prudent to remove the ring before coming in contact with any cleaning agents, pool or shower water, gardening, washing dishes, etc.

Pearls measure 6.2mm at center and 18.4mm wide. Setting rises 2.4mm off the finger. At back of ring, narrowest part of ring shank measures 1.2mm.
