Antique Opal and Pearl Slide Chain
Antique Opal and Pearl Slide Chain
A gorgeous slide chain featuring a large solid 10 karat gold slide embellished with a white opal cabochon surrounded by an entourage of pearls. The chain and clasp are gold-filled and the chain is ornately textured with a pattern that complements the shape and design of the opal and pearl slide. The central opal features the play of color this incredible gem is known for, with flashes of bright green and bright blue and glowing red undertones. Slide chains such as these were immensely popular during the Victorian era. Crafted in both gold and gold-filled, they could be layered, worn long, doubled up - the possibilities were (and remain) quite vast. This chain would look wonderful worn alone, layered with other chains, or strung with a pendant or favorite charm(s). Fastens with dog clip style clasp.
What is “gold-filled?” Gold-filled jewelry is higher quality than gold-plated and lower cost than solid (alloyed) gold. Typically, gold-filled jewelry is required to have a 1/20th (or 5%) weight in gold (usually 14k,) which is affixed/bonded to all exterior portions of the jewelry item (which usually has a brass, or sometimes copper, core.) Gold-plated jewelry has no such standards and as a result usually involves a much thinner coating of gold. Gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime without showing signs of wear and makes for excellent and durable everyday-wear pieces.
