Antique Locket

A charming Victorian era gold-filled locket. Engraved with lovely, flowing cursive initials “F M M C.” This sweet and romantic jewel opens near the top of the locket, next to the bail. Inside are two circular rings behind which a photo or memento may be slipped. Currently there are two darling vintage photos in place; I will leave those for the buyer and they may keep or replace at their discretion. The back of the locket is blank and could be worn facing out, or engraved with a different name by your jeweler. Locket and bail are gold-filled; comes complete with gold-filled chain which fastens with a spring ring style clasp. 

What is “gold-filled?” Gold-filled jewelry is higher quality than gold-plated and lower cost than solid (alloyed) gold. Typically, gold-filled jewelry is required to have a 1/20th (or 5%) weight in gold (usually 14k,) which is affixed/bonded to all exterior portions of the jewelry item (which usually has a brass, or sometimes copper, core.) Gold-plated jewelry has no such standards and as a result usually involves a much thinner coating of gold. Gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime without showing signs of wear and makes for excellent and durable everyday-wear pieces.
