Antique Heart Locket

A striking and sweet Victorian era gold-filled locket. This locket is in the form of a heart and the face is set with eight small clear glass paste gems, evocative of diamonds. The back of the locket is blank and could be worn facing out, or engraved with a different name by your jeweler. This utterly romantic jewel opens near the side. Inside are two circular rings behind which a photo or memento may be slipped. These rings have cellophane sleeves set very sturdily inside - it may be easier to set a photo on top rather than lifting the antique frames out and then replacing them. Please note that this locket closes *very* securely and takes a little effort to open. It may be best for someone who wants to keep a few treasured photos inside and keep the jewel primarily closed. Locket and bail are gold-filled; comes complete with gold-filled chain which fastens with a spring ring style clasp. 

What is “gold-filled?” Gold-filled jewelry is higher quality than gold-plated and lower cost than solid (alloyed) gold. Typically, gold-filled jewelry is required to have a 1/20th (or 5%) weight in gold (usually 14k,) which is affixed/bonded to all exterior portions of the jewelry item (which usually has a brass, or sometimes copper, core.) Gold-plated jewelry has no such standards and as a result usually involves a much thinner coating of gold. Gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime without showing signs of wear and makes for excellent and durable everyday-wear pieces.
