Antique Gold Tassel Necklace II
Antique Gold Tassel Necklace II
An 18 karat gold tassel pendant necklace comprised of a curved, ridged and ornamented cap and bail, below which hang a bevy of segments of foxtail chain. This tassel-style jewel hails from the Victorian era. Like many jewelry objects of this time period, tassels are rife with symbolism. In the Bible, tassels were specially knotted devotional and ritual ornaments. Elsewhere, they came to favor among royalty in many different cultures - Egyptian pharaohs were entombed draped in tassels.Broadly, in the Middle East they were regarded as protective and employed in driving away bad spirits. During the Victorian era, tassels were objects of ornament on clothing, shoes, home decor and jewelry. In a modern interpretation, a tassel can represent the completion of an accomplishment such as education (part of why tassels are worn on graduation caps.) This beautiful pendant features eight lengths of foxtail chain, each with a golden beaded tip, below a wonderfully domed cap, ornamented with textured rose gold accents.
This pendant hangs on an 18” gold-filled cable chain, which fastens with a spring ring style clasp.
