Antique Gold Tassel Necklace
Antique Gold Tassel Necklace
A 15 karat gold tassel pendant necklace comprised of an elongated golden cap with a textural “chain” pattern covering the surface. Below the cap hang a group of lengths of foxtail chain, each terminating in a round golden orb. This antique tassel-style jewel hails from the Victorian era. Like many jewelry objects of this era, tassels are rife with symbolism. In the Bible, tassels were specially knotted devotional and ritual ornaments. Elsewhere, they came to favor among royalty in many different cultures - Egyptian pharaohs were entombed draped in tassels. Broadly, in the Middle East they were regarded as protective and employed in driving away bad spirits. During the Victorian period, tassels were objects of ornament on clothing, shoes, home decor and jewelry. In a modern interpretation, a tassel can represent the completion of an accomplishment such as education (part of why tassels are worn on graduation caps.) This beautiful pendant features ten lengths of foxtail chain, each with a golden beaded tip, below a wonderfully domed cap. This pendant hangs on an 18” gold-filled cable chain, which fastens with a spring ring style clasp.
