A large and striking Victorian-era ring featuring an oval-shaped cabochon of dendritic agate, set in 14 karat yellow gold. The agate is slightly brownish in color tone and transparent, save for a gorgeous natural dendritic inclusion running through the body of the gem. Dendritic agate is a variety of chalcedony (a member of the quartz family) that features dendritic inclusions that grew in the body of the gem as it was forming. Agate inclusions such as these are so fun because they are often evocative of natural symbols or elements; in this case, this one reminds me of a crescent moon or a row of batting eyelashes. What do you see? The stone is set in a wide bezel setting, with forked shoulders that cradle the gallery gently on each side and curve down to form the ring shank.
