A lovely antique pendant necklace featuring a large oval shaped carved cameo of pink coral depicting a woman facing forward and looking slightly towards the viewer’s left. The woman has an abundant head of wavy hair and wears a slightly draped gown. The cameo is bezel set and surrounded by a wide, naturalistic and highly detailed 10 karat yellow gold border featuring a ring of interconnected acanthus leaves and four five-petaled flowers, each centered with one single cut diamond measuring approximately 1.0 mm.
This pretty and highly wearable jewel is a convertible pendant/brooch, which hangs from a gold bail on a 14 karat yellow gold box chain. The chain fastens with a spring ring style clasp. The bail is hinged and can be concealed when the pendant is worn as a brooch. The back of the brooch fastens with a hinged pin and locking clasp.
Cameos in jewelry date back to the third century, B.C., and gained incredible popularity in the mid- to late-1800s when this became a popular jewelry style among those making "The Grand Tour."
