A lovely pink coral cameo necklace with a lustrous golden bezel setting. Cameos such as this one are difficult to find in such perfect condition. Coral, the material from which this example is carved, is often worn, chipped or in poor condition after over 100 years of life in someone’s jewelry collection. This example is pristine: the details of the carving as as sharp and crisp as if they were just made in a jeweler’s workshop. The cameo depicts a woman in profile, facing towards the viewer’s right. She is dressed in a draped gown, with long, curling locks of hair protected by a neatly folded headdress or scarf.

The cameo is framed in a golden bezel setting with an outer rim that is textured and delicately engraved with hand-accented scrollwork. A newer gold bail, which likely replaced a jump ring, has been provided.

Cameos in jewelry date back to the third century, B.C., and gained incredible popularity in the mid- to late-1800s when this became a popular jewelry style among those making "The Grand Tour."
