An absolutely stunning and very large (almost 26 carats!) amethyst set in a rosy yellow gold antique ring mounting. This ring dates from the middle Victorian era and has been beautifully preserved. The amethyst is oval-shaped, having a deep, rich color with slight lilac blue undertones. The gem is cradled at the north, south, east and west sides by double claw prongs and held in a solid gold gallery which tapers to sit comfortably against the finger.

Amethyst is a variety of quartz found all over the world. In ancient times, the rich purple hue of this gem conferred a meaning of wealth and status (as in a connection to royalty) and was believed to be an antidote for melancholy. Until the late 19th century, amethyst was considered as rare as diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald. Eventually, large deposits were discovered in Brazil, allowing the modern market a wider variety of this beautiful gem for jewelry production.
