This darling and sentimental jewel bears so many hallmarks of what makes Victorian era jewelry so beloved. Centering the ring is a beautiful, slightly elongated oval-shaped amethyst, with that gorgeous rosy pink that stones from this era often bear. Cradled in twelve secure prongs, the stone is accented at either shoulder with crisp, geometric etching. Inside the ring is a script dedication: “Willie to Fannie, May 15, 1873.” In impeccable condition for its age, this ring is ready for a lifetime of wear with a new owner. Amethyst is the birthstone of the month February.
Amethyst is a variety of quartz found all over the world. In ancient times, the rich purple hue of this gem conferred a meaning of wealth and status (as in a connection to royalty) and was believed to be an antidote for melancholy. Until the late 19th century, amethyst was considered as rare as diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald. Eventually, large deposits were discovered in Brazil, allowing the modern market a wider variety of this beautiful gem for jewelry production.
