Agate Intaglio and Gold Ring

This handsome intaglio ring has tremendous presence. A central oval shaped agate is bezel set in a 10 karat yellow gold setting. Intaglios are carvings onto a flat gem surface that create a concave impression or image. This agate features an intaglio engraving of a Roman soldier in profile, complete with an ornamented helmet and some artistic flourishes. The ring’s setting is sturdy and handsomely detailed, with layered scroll motifs flanking the central gem. Each shoulder of the ring features the same motif, with a 180 degree flip that creates visual interest. This piece looks to be from the middle of the 20th century. A ring like this one would originally have been designed and crafted for a man, but anyone can wear it.

Top gallery (intaglio and bezel) measures 22.1mm tall and 15.9mm wide. Setting rises 6.2mm off the finger. At back of ring, narrowest part of ring shank measures 4.3mm.

Ring size 10.75 / UK V 1/2. If needed, this ring may be sized either up or down a few sizes by your jeweler. 

Very good condition. There are a few minute fleabites at the edge of the agate; these are visible in close up photos near the top and side of the ring.
